Art On A Desert Island

You know the routine; you've been unjustly exiled to an island for life, you will never come in contact with another human being again, you have no hope of seeking justice, no hope of escape. However, you are well equipped so your physical needs well be met and it just so happens that there is a first-rate DVD/VHS player on the island which will also play CDs. What luck! Now the hitch. The authorities are allowing you to bring only nine works of art with you; three books, three albums and three films (you may also bring a Bible if you wish without counting it in the book category). Now the question; which three of each category are you going to bring?

My choices:

Books,

1. Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien
2. Till We Have Faces, C. S. Lewis
3. Brendan, Frederick Buechner

Music,

1. The Joshua Tree, U2
2. Sixpence None the Richer, Sixpence None the Richer
3. Mr. Buechner's Dream, Daniel Amos

Film,

1. Ordet
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. Babette's Feast

=====

Special thanks to midnitcafe for inspiring this post.

Hey there, glad to see you are posting again, (yes, I know I should have checked sooner but I just got back from a trip.) I like your list choices, and by the way, I'm making up my book list for the next few months and I need to know just how good Brendan is... Also, here are my book choices:

1. Lord of the Rings Trilogy
2. The Genesis Trilogy (L'Engle)
3. David Copperfield

Foolish Knight I had a thought on my blog come and see.

My first guess is:
Book I would take Lord of the Rings
(So much reading with all that back story in the appendices at the end of the Triolgy)
Movies maybe...?
Music maybe some Beethoven possibly a u2 CD and maybe some Newsboys or the like. I am most defenitly going to have to work on this.

Will the goverment refurbish the DVDs/CDs and the like if they wear out?

Thankfully this is a magical island where books, albums and movies never wear down. Nifty, huh?

Now I'll say it,'Hmmm. This is hard, you make me think more than anyone else I have ever known!'

Well, I think I know what I'd do for music. I'd take
1. Coldplay: A Rush Of Blood To The Head
2 Rich Mullins: A Liturgy, A Legacy, And A Ragamuffin Band
3. Bebo Norman: Big Blue Sky
I know those aren't the most spectacular choices in music, but they're the ones I like the best.
As for books (and I'm assuming this is besides the Bible)
1. Lord Of The Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
2. The Man Who Was Thursday, G.K. Chesterton
3. The Space Trilogy (does the entire set count? It's sometimes sold as one book!)
Movies, a little bit harder, hmmm...
1. The Truman Show (it would make sense, you know, the premise of being stuck on an Island, and no one will let you get off!)
2. Finding Neverland (was one good movie, but this one's subject to change)
3. Fiddler On The Roof
Note that all of this is subject to change at any given time.

Good job guys, except for one thing. No Space Trilogy, no Genesis trilogy. The Lord of the Rings is OK because it was written as one book, I don't think it's the case with these other books. Sorry, correct me if I'm wrong, but what can I say? Life’s tough.

I've desert island-ed all three of these on my blog, but it's more fun to start all over.

Books:
Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck
Lord of the Rings Trilogy (since you're allowing it as one volume)
Les miserables - Victor Hugo (In French, I'm reading the English transation currently and its a whopping 1200 pages so I figure trying to read it in French will take the rest of my life)

To Penny Lane: I am also reading Jane Eyre. How do you like it?

CDS:
Live Dead - Grateful Dead
Stardust - Willie Nelson
One Fair Summer Evening - Nanci Griffith

DVDs:
Seven Samauri
To Kill a mockingbird
Casablanca

Can we build a boat to trade with each other?

actually, Mr. Evil Government Lawmaker Person, LOTR was written as three separate books, and was not made into a single volume until about a decade after, if I'm not mistaken, which I commonly am. But hopefully not this time, as I reeeallllly want to keep the space trilogy with me on my outing to a desert isle.

This is really hard...I really do not like reading, but here lately I am really starting to like it sooo...

Books:
1. The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien, because I have yet to finish it.
2. Lord of the Rings, J.R.R Tolkien, because I want to read it.
3. HALO: The Fall of the Read, Eric S. Nylund. (HAHA)

Music:
1. MMHMM, Relient K
2. 1, Beatles
3. Lose This Life, Tait

Movies...ummm...
1. Pirates of the Caribbean
2. Lord of the Rings
3. Phantom of the Opera..
I think that's right...I do not know...

remember these are the only things you will be reading, watching and listening to for the rest of your life.

Joel, my understanding is that Lord of the Rings was originally supposed to be one giant volume, but Tolkein's publishers decided that it must be split into three parts.

You are welcome penny lane. Yes, I am nearly finnished with Jane Eyre. How far along are you? Keep reading, it is well worth the effort. The book really doesn't get good until after Lowood.

Well, if I absolutely had to pick one of the three out of the space trilogy, it would probably be That Hideous Strength. Call me weird, but that was my favorite one. But since I couldn't have the entire trilogy, I'd probably just change it to The Great Divorce, instead.

And BTW, the Genesis Trilogy is actually sold as one book, one volume. The same way we refer to LOTR as a trilogy. So unless we're going to discount LOTR, then the genesis trilogy counts, I guess.

Books:
The Complete Works of Josephius
American Dictionary of the English Language - Naoh Webster 1828
Ben Hur

CDs:
U2 - How To Dismantle....
tobyMac - Welcome to Diverse City
Relient K - The Anatomy of the Tongue and Cheek

DVDs:
Fiddler on the Roof
We Were Soldiers
Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Trying to get as much range as possible, so if anybody drops by we would have something to do.

1.LOTR
2.Foxes Book of Martyrs(I've never read it but I like the whole persecuted for the faith deal and it's really big so it would take a long time to read)
3.The Hobbit

1.Jonah33
2.Relient K mmmhmmm
3.Toby Mac Welcome to Diverse City

1.LOTR(if it was up to one of LOTR it would be The Two Towers)
2.Spiderman 2
3.Bourn Sepremacy(that would be an awesome movie if I had a DVD player that had a foul language filter built into it, now if didn't, it would be Nicholas Nickleby)

There you have it, Represent.

I can't make up my mind!!! I do know that one of the albums would be The Joshua Tree, and one of the books, The Lord of the Rings, but that is all I can think of.

Oh yes, I also think we should get in addition to the Bible we should get a sketch book and never-ending pencils!
