Very interesting...I'll bet this is the quote everyone uses when they say Tolkien hated allegory, which, if taken in context, is simply not true. He just didn't want everything to be a conscious parallel between spirituality and reality.
He rather wanted it as a sub-conscious state of mind, to allegorize it in the reader's mind without the reader knowing it is an allegory. Very fascinating.
